Bellville originally served as an "outspan" for travellers on the route from Cape Town to the interior. The original 12-mile milestone still stands at the corner of Voortrekker and Durban Roads as a reminder of its historic past. Haardekraaltjie caravan park as it is known today was used as the original outspan.
What has now become a major national railway centre in Bellville, was once a simple railway siding and depot which was known as D'Urban Road as it was the closest depot to the town of Durbanville, then known as D'Urban. |
Bellville was awarded its name on the 18th November 1861 in honour of Charles Bell (Surveyor-General of the Cape) and gained municipality status in 1940. Develepment has been rapid since then
The Tygerberg Hill overlooks the city of Bellville and offers the most spectacular views of the Cape Flats and Table Bay. In former years a signal cannon was fired from the crest of the Tygerberg to signal the arrival of vessels in the harbour, informing farmers of the potential to sell their produce to the new arrivals.
The Tygerberg is now home to a 60 ha reserve conserving indigenous plants and a number of small animals. The reserve is open to the public and offers gentle hikes through the reserve from where the views of Cape Town are unsurpassed.
Bellville is at the heart of the Tygerberg and is situated in the Tygerberg hills. Properties and real estate here provide great capital appreciation along with stunning views of wine farms and mountains. The magnificent homes and properties in Bellville are favoured by investors, businessmen and holiday makers.
They are attracted by the quiet, beautiful residential suburbs that offer easy access to the Cape's magnificent beaches, the winelands and the centre of Cape Town.
The Tygerberg is only 25km north of Cape Town. The name 'Tygerberg' comes from the tiger-like strips of vegetation on the hills overlooking Cape Town. These hills provide a spectacular view of Table Mountain and Table Bay to the west and the wine lands and he Hottentots-Holland mountains to the north-east.
Tygerberg has rolling vineyards, glorious sea and mountain views, excellent facilities and a superb climate.
Tygerberg offers an exciting and unique blend of Western and African cultures and a variety of diverse features that make it truly cosmopolitan. The vast rural areas to the north with their golden wheat fields, the splendour of the wine lands and the historic farms close by all contribute to making this area a desirable one in which to live.
Tygerberg has a bustling business district centred around Voortrekker and Durban roads where business has been conducted since 1900. The area has attracted many offices and headquarters of national and international companies and boasts some of South Africa's finest shopping centres.
There are excellent private and government medical facilities as well as well-respected schools.
