Umtentweni is named after the Umtentweni River, which takes its name from the spiky grass growing on its banks. Umtentweni Beach, is a good beach with paddling pool, seniors swimming area, protected from currents and heavy waves, and a general swimming area overseen by lifesavers every day of the week, the beach is protected by sharknets.

There are a number of pubs and restaurants in Umtentweni itself and also in nearby Port Shepstone known as the business centre of the lower South Coast, is a busy seaside town with all the popular stores such as Pick 'n Pay, Shopright Checkers and Spar. The lighthouse, a major landmark, is also home to the Publicity Information Centre for the area.
