Scottburgh is one of the most popular resorts on the sunny South Coast, famous for its strelitzia (‘bird of paradise’) flowers. Attempts were made to use the bay to export sugar, but it offered scant shelter from rough seas.
However, boats found rich fishing grounds nearby at the Aliwal Shoal. A lighthouse was built in 1892 to mark the shoal, but was eventually moved to Port Shepstone.
