The first visitor to St Francis Bay was Diogo Pereira Botelho, he called on the area to replenish his water supply in 1537. The second visitor was Manoel de Mesquita Perestrello, he was to explore the coast from Cape of Good Hope to Cape Correntes.
He eventually reached a Cape he named "Cape Serras" (Cape St Francis) and a bay to the east he named S. Francisca.
It is possible that he gave the bay its name because he was reminded of, or wished to honour the monastery of S. Francisco in his home town of Santareme. |
The Cape St Francis lighthouse was build because there were numerous ships that wrecked themselves on the rocky shore of the bay. It was finished in 1878 and still functions today. At 33 meters, it is the highest lighthouse built on the coast of
South Africa, and is now also used as a weather station. This lighthouse was for years considered one of the most remote on the South African coast and for many years the only way to reach it was per ox wagon over the dunes. Without an ox wagon the only way was per foot. The lighthouse has been declared a historical building
